01WHAT IT IS

नस्य · Administration through the nose, one of the five Panchakarma procedures

Ayurveda describes the nose as the doorway to the head. Nasyam delivers a measured quantity of medicated ghee or oil into each nostril after the face, forehead and neck have been massaged and warmed with steam. The preparation acts on the sinuses, the upper airway and, in Ayurvedic understanding, on everything above the collarbone: the head, the sense organs and the mind.

It is one of the five classical Panchakarma procedures and is also used on its own. Ghee Nasyam is the gentler, nourishing form. Special Ayur Nasyam uses stronger herbal preparations chosen by the practitioner for a specific concern and takes a little longer.

02HOW IT IS DONE AT AROGYA

  1. 01

Consultation decides the preparation and the number of drops, and confirms there is no acute infection.

  2. 02

The face, forehead and neck are massaged with warm oil.

  3. 03

Gentle steam is applied to the face to open the nasal passages.

  4. 04

You lie with the head slightly lowered while the warm preparation is instilled into each nostril.

  5. 05

You rest for a few minutes, then any excess is expelled and a warm gargle is given.

06QUESTIONS

Common questions about Nasyam.

Does Nasyam feel uncomfortable?

There is a brief sensation of warmth in the nose and sometimes at the back of the throat. It passes within minutes and most guests find the facial massage and steam beforehand very relaxing.

Can I do Nasyam at home?

A simple daily drop of plain oil or ghee is sometimes advised for maintenance. Therapeutic Nasyam with medicated preparations is done at the centre after assessment.

How soon will I notice a difference?

Nasal breathing often feels easier the same day. For long-standing sinus or headache tendencies, a course over several days is needed and the effect builds gradually.
