AYURVEDIC TREATMENTS

Sutra

01WHAT IT IS

सूत्र नेति · Sutra, a thread; neti, nasal cleansing

Sutra Neti is one of the Shatkarmas, the six classical yogic cleansing practices. A soft waxed cotton thread or a thin rubber catheter is passed gently through one nostril and drawn out through the mouth, then moved back and forth a few times to clear and stimulate the nasal passage. Each side is treated in turn.

It is traditionally used for chronic nasal blockage, allergic rhinitis, sinus tendencies, snoring and mouth breathing, and as a preparation for pranayama. At Arogya Retreatt it is taught and performed under supervision, and guests who wish to continue at home are trained carefully first.

02HOW IT IS DONE AT AROGYA

  1. 01

Consultation checks the nasal passages and rules out infection or structural problems.

  2. 02

Jala Neti, a saline nasal wash, is usually done first to moisten the passages.

  3. 03

The practitioner passes the thread or catheter gently through one nostril and retrieves it from the mouth.

  4. 04

The thread is moved back and forth a few times, then withdrawn; the other side is treated.

  5. 05

A final saline wash and forceful exhalations clear the passages; you rest for a few minutes.

04WHAT TO EXPECT

The first session can feel strange and may provoke watering of the eyes or a sneeze; this settles quickly. Nasal breathing often feels clearer immediately. Once learnt correctly, the practice takes a few minutes and can be repeated at home as advised.

This page is educational and describes the therapy as traditionally practised. It is not medical advice and does not replace consultation with a qualified practitioner. Suitability, preparation and duration are confirmed individually at Arogya Retreatt. Content reviewed September 2026.

05QUESTIONS

Common questions about Sutra Neti.

Is Sutra Neti painful?

It should not be painful when done correctly with a soft, lubricated thread. There is an unusual sensation and sometimes a tickle that causes sneezing. Discomfort usually means the technique or the angle needs adjusting, which is why it is taught under supervision.

How often should it be done?

For a chronic tendency, a short daily course is often advised, then once or twice a week for maintenance. The practitioner will set a schedule for you.

Is Jala Neti enough on its own?

For many people a saline wash is sufficient. Sutra Neti is used where blockage is persistent or where a stronger cleansing is wanted.
