01WHAT IT IS

पोडिकिऴि · Choorna Pinda Sweda · Podi, powder, and kizhi, a bolus

Podikizhi is a form of Swedana, therapeutic sudation. Dried herbal powders such as kolakulathadi choornam are tied into cotton boluses, heated, and pressed and rubbed rhythmically over the body or over an affected joint. The combination of dry heat, herbal action and pressure loosens stiffness and encourages sweating without the heaviness of an oil bath.

It is a therapy of choice where there is Kapha or Vata involvement with stiffness, swelling and dull pain: inflammatory joint conditions in their quieter phases, muscular pain after exertion, heaviness in the limbs, and as a preparatory step in Panchkarma for guests who need warmth without much oil.

02HOW IT IS DONE AT AROGYA

  1. 01

The practitioner selects the herbal powder mix and decides whether the whole body or a region is treated.

  2. 02

A light application of oil may be given first, depending on your constitution.

  3. 03

Two boluses are heated in a pan and alternated so the temperature stays constant.

  4. 04

The therapist works the warm boluses over the body in firm, rhythmic strokes for the full session.

  5. 05

You rest, then take a warm shower after a short interval as advised.

05QUESTIONS

Common questions about Podikizhi.

Is Podikizhi the same as Potli massage?

They are close relatives. Potli is the general term for a heated herbal bundle used in massage; Podikizhi specifically uses dry herbal powders. Elakizhi uses fresh leaves and Navarakizhi uses medicated rice.

How many sessions are usual?

For stiffness and pain a course of five to seven daily sessions is common. Within a Panchkarma program it is scheduled by the practitioner as part of the preparatory phase.

Will it hurt?

The pressure is firm but should never be painful. The boluses are hot to the touch but applied at a temperature you can comfortably bear, and the therapist checks with you throughout.
