AYURVEDIC TREATMENTS
Takradhara
A cooling variant of Shirodhara in which herb-infused buttermilk is poured over the forehead. Traditionally used for heat, irritability, scalp conditions and disturbed sleep.
01WHAT IT IS
तक्रधारा · Takra, medicated buttermilk, poured as a stream
Takradhara follows the same method as Shirodhara but replaces oil with takra, buttermilk that has been processed with cooling herbs such as amla and musta. The stream is poured at a comfortable temperature over the forehead, or over the whole body when advised, and the effect is markedly cooling and settling.
It is the therapy Ayurveda reaches for when heat is the problem: burning sensations, irritability, sleep broken by restlessness, and Pitta-type scalp and skin complaints. Because it does not leave an oily residue it is also chosen for guests who find oil therapies heavy.
02HOW IT IS DONE AT AROGYA
- 01
Consultation confirms suitability and whether the stream is limited to the head or extended to the body.
- 02
The medicated buttermilk is prepared fresh and brought to a mild, comfortable temperature.
- 03
You lie with the eyes covered while the stream is poured gently across the forehead.
- 04
The therapist keeps the flow steady for the full session, typically 45 minutes.
- 05
The scalp is cleaned and you rest briefly before rising.

05QUESTIONS
Common questions about Takradhara.
How is Takradhara different from Shirodhara?
The method is the same; the liquid is different. Shirodhara uses warm medicated oil and is warming and grounding. Takradhara uses cooled medicated buttermilk and is cooling and clarifying. The practitioner chooses based on your constitution and the season.
Is it messy?
Less so than oil. The buttermilk is contained by the treatment table and wiped away at the end, leaving no oily residue.
Can it be done in winter?
It can, but it is chosen more cautiously in cold weather and usually only for guests with a clear heat imbalance.
