AYURVEDIC TREATMENTS
Vamana
A supervised Panchakarma cleansing procedure that removes excess Kapha through controlled emesis, after days of oil and steam preparation. Used in respiratory, skin and metabolic conditions.
01WHAT IT IS
वमन · Therapeutic emesis, one of the five Panchakarma procedures
Vamana is the first of the five classical Panchakarma procedures. It is a medically supervised cleansing in which accumulated Kapha is expelled from the stomach and chest through controlled, induced emesis. It is never given on its own: several days of internal oleation with medicated ghee and external oil and steam therapies prepare the body first, and a careful graded diet follows.
Traditionally Vamana is used for conditions with a Kapha predominance: chronic respiratory tendencies, certain skin conditions, obesity and metabolic sluggishness, and some digestive complaints. It is done only at the centre, only after thorough assessment, and only in the season and for the guest that the practitioner judges suitable.
02HOW IT IS DONE AT AROGYA
- 01
A detailed consultation assesses suitability, and the preparatory schedule is set.
- 02
Internal oleation: medicated ghee is taken in increasing doses for three to seven days.
- 03
External oleation and steam: Abhyanga and Swedana are given daily to mobilise Kapha.
- 04
Procedure day: on an empty stomach, a Kapha-provoking preparation and herbal emetics are given, and emesis is guided and monitored by the practitioner.
- 05
Recovery: rest, then a graded diet from thin gruel back to normal food over several days.

04WHAT TO EXPECT
Vamana is a significant procedure. The preparatory days are calm and oily; the procedure itself takes a morning and is closely supervised; the recovery diet is strict and important. Guests describe feeling lighter, clearer and with better appetite afterwards. It is only offered within a residential program.
This page is educational and describes the therapy as traditionally practised. It is not medical advice and does not replace consultation with a qualified practitioner. Suitability, preparation and duration are confirmed individually at Arogya Retreatt. Content reviewed September 2026.
05QUESTIONS
Common questions about Vamana.
Is Vamana safe?
When performed by a qualified practitioner, on a suitable guest, after proper preparation and with monitoring, Vamana is a well-established procedure. Its safety depends entirely on that process, which is why it is never rushed or done as a stand-alone session.
How many days does it take?
Typically seven to ten days including preparation and recovery diet. The practitioner will set the schedule for your case.
Can I have Vamana on a day-care package?
No. Vamana requires a residential stay so that preparation, the procedure and the recovery diet can be supervised.
