HYDROTHERAPY
Hip
Bath
Immersion of the pelvis and lower abdomen in water at a prescribed temperature. Naturopathy's classic bath for digestion, constipation, pelvic congestion and reproductive health.
01WHAT IT IS
In a hip bath you sit in a specially shaped tub so that only the pelvis, hips and lower abdomen are immersed, with the feet outside the water. The temperature is the prescription: cold or neutral water tones the abdominal organs and is used for sluggish digestion, constipation and pelvic congestion; a warm hip bath relaxes cramps and pelvic pain.
The Sitz bath is the close relative, a shallower seat bath used for local relief in haemorrhoids, post-partum recovery and pelvic discomfort. Both are foundational applications in a naturopathy program.

06QUESTIONS
Common questions about Hip Bath.
Why cold water for constipation?
Cool water on the abdomen stimulates the muscles of the gut and the local circulation, which naturopathy uses to encourage regular movement. The temperature is always set by the practitioner.
